Introduction
P. & D. Duncan.
Firm was founded in 1866 by Peter Duncan, a Scot who had arrived in New
Zealand some years before. In 1867, David Duncan came out to join his
brother. They called their firm the "South British Agricultural Implement
Works", but it was always better know as P & D Duncan. Their
first product was a plough, which sold before completion, and the brothers
soon had more work than they could cope with.
In 1869, their premises were burnt down, but with help from friends they
reopened in a temporary building. New premises by 1875, new blacksmith's
& wheelwrights shops in 1876. By 1884, P & D Duncan were making
a large line of agricultural implements, horse gears, chaff cutters and
threshing mills.
In 1894 the firm incorporated to P & D Duncan Ltd.
In 1940, they made an arrangement with Massey Harris to manufacture all
of MH's tillage gear in New Zealand.
