Introduction

International Harvester Company of Australia.

International Harvester Company of America appears in directories in Australia in the very early years of 20th C. By 1919 we see International Harvester Company of Australia listed in S & M Victoria. Locations such as Kerang, Geelong, Sth Melbbourne, Nth Terrace SA, Murat Bay SA, Streaky Bay SA & Ceduna SA are mentioned in directories.

Later still, in the 1950's a large truck plant was set up, initially at the implement works in Geelong, but soon after in a purpose build works at Dandenong, in the then outer south east Melbourne. Dandenong has a rich supply of migrant labour from migration post WWII, and the plant was strategically placed beside a major highway and railway.

Spanners marked IHC are common in Australia. Many were imported with implements and machinery from the US. However, locally produced spanners and wrenches most often had the AP prefix to numbers, but some did not. It is safe to say that any found with the AP prefix are definitely locally made or made for the Australian arm of IHC.

International Harvester Australia supplied implements by other companies such as Newell Sanders Plow Co from America and Gaston Bros from Australia.

See below for Some Newell Sanders catalogue material and wrenches
