Doug Banks writes: "This spanner was manufactured by my late brother Ian Banks in our parent's engineering workshop at 45 Howard Road, Lowery Bay New Zealand. Ian was seriously modifying an Indian Scout motor cycle with the objective of significantly increasing the horse power output. It was renamed The Banks Special No.1.
As I recall, heads, carburettor, exhaust systems and other compenents were greatly modified.
In the process, my brother made numerous special tools, most of which were stamped like the spanner in question.
In the early 60's when he moved to Australia, my brother took the Indian motor cycle and all its components with him.
As Ian passed away last year, I can only assume that at some stage over the intervening years, the motor cycle and components have been sold or redistributed.

Ian G W Banks New Zealand

For Banks Special No 1. -a greatly modified Indian Scout motor cycle.

The new Everitt-Metzger-Flanders Company represented a merger of the Wayne Automobile Company and the Northern Motor Car Company, in which William Metzger quickly and conveniently acquired a controlling interest. This provided E-M-F three ready-made plants, Wayne's and Northern's in Detroit, and the latter's second plant in Port Huron. To provide a ready-made dealership organization, E-M-F contacted the Studebaker brothers in Indiana. Panhard & Levassor tool kit spanner from the period 1890 - 1945.

Panhard et Levassor sold their first automobile in 1890. based on a Daimler engine license.

From 1910 Panhard worked to develop engines without conventional valves, using under license the sleeve valve technology that had been patented by the American Charles Yale Knight . Between 1910 and 1924 the Panhard & Levassor catalogue listed plenty of models with conventional valve engines, but these were offered alongside cars powered by sleeve valve power units. Following various detailed improvements to the sleeve valve technology by Panhard's own engineering department, from 1924 till 1940 all Panhard cars used sleeve valve engines .

After World War II the company was renamed Panhard (without "Levassor"),
